Root Canal Treatment

Endodontics · New Cairo

Gentle, precise treatment that removes infection, relieves pain and saves your natural tooth.

Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth, cleans and disinfects its canals, then seals them. It relieves the pain of an infected nerve and, in most cases, lets you keep your natural tooth instead of losing it.

When do you need it?

Inside every tooth is the pulp, the soft tissue that contains its nerve and blood supply. Deep decay, a crack or a knock can allow bacteria to reach it, causing inflammation or infection. Typical signs are lingering pain with hot or cold, throbbing toothache, pain when biting, swelling of the gum or face, or a small pimple on the gum. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and the problem is spotted on an X-ray. Without treatment, infection can spread into the bone, and the tooth may eventually be lost.

What to expect

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so treatment usually feels much like having a filling. A thin protective sheet isolates the tooth to keep it clean and dry. Working under a dental operating microscope, we locate the canals, remove the infected tissue, and clean and shape them before filling and sealing. Depending on the tooth and the infection, this takes one or two visits. Digital X-rays guide each stage, and at the end we place a temporary or permanent filling to close the tooth.

Recovery & aftercare

It is normal for the tooth to feel tender for a few days, especially when biting; the pain relief our team recommends usually controls it. Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the tooth is fully restored. A root-treated back tooth is more likely to crack, so we usually recommend a crown soon after treatment to protect it. Contact us if you notice significant swelling, or pain that worsens rather than improves. With a good seal and a strong restoration, a treated tooth can serve you well for many years.

§Root Canal Treatment

How it works

  1. 01

    Diagnosis & X-ray

We examine the tooth, test the nerve and take a digital X-ray to see the roots and bone.

  2. 02

    Numbing & isolation

The tooth is numbed and isolated with a protective sheet to keep it clean and dry.

  3. 03

    Cleaning under the microscope

Infected tissue is removed and the canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped.

  4. 04

    Filling & sealing

The canals are filled and sealed to stop bacteria from returning.

  5. 05

    Final restoration

A filling or crown restores strength and protects the tooth for the long term.

§Questions, answered

Root Canal Treatment

Is a root canal painful?

Modern root canal treatment is usually no more uncomfortable than a filling, because the tooth is fully numbed. In fact, it is done to relieve pain. Some tenderness for a few days afterwards is common and normally eases with simple pain relief.

Why not just extract the tooth?

Keeping your natural tooth is usually the best option for chewing, appearance and the health of the neighbouring teeth. An extracted tooth generally needs replacing with an implant or bridge to stop the remaining teeth from shifting. We consider extraction only when a tooth cannot be saved predictably.

How many visits will I need?

Many root canals are completed in one visit, while teeth with several canals, severe infection or previous treatment may need two or more. We explain the plan for your tooth after examining it and reviewing the X-ray.

Do I need a crown afterwards?

Back teeth usually do, because they carry heavy chewing forces and can become brittle after treatment. Front teeth with little damage may only need a filling. We recommend the restoration that best protects your tooth for the long term.

Results vary from person to person. Every treatment plan is decided after an in-person clinical examination.
