Digital Smile Design

DSD & smile mock-up · New Cairo

See your new smile on screen — then in your mouth — before a single tooth is touched.

Every case starts as a design. Using 3D scans, photographs and precise shade matching, your new smile is planned on screen around your facial proportions, then transferred to a mock-up so you can test-drive it before any treatment begins.

Why design comes first

A beautiful smile is a matter of proportion: how tooth length relates to your lips, how width relates to your face, how the edges follow your smile line. Digital smile design lets us study all of this before treatment rather than guessing during it. It also makes preparation more conservative, because we know exactly where porcelain needs to go and can avoid removing tooth structure the final result does not need. For Dr. Youssef El-Embaby, it is where every case begins — the drawing before the craft.

What happens during the session

We take a series of photographs and short videos of your face and smile, record your shade, and capture your teeth with a digital 3D scan — in most cases without messy impression trays. The design is then built on screen around your features: midline, lip line, tooth shape and length. Next, it is transferred into a mock-up, a temporary material placed over your own teeth without drilling, so you can see it in the mirror, speak, smile and take photographs.

Refining and approving

The mock-up is a conversation, not a final verdict. You can live with the design, show it to people you trust and tell us what you would change — a little longer, softer edges, a different shade. We refine it until it feels like you. That approved design then becomes the shared plan between you, the doctor and the dental lab, guiding preparation and the final restorations. A design session does not commit you to treatment; many patients use it simply to understand their options clearly.

§Questions, answered

Digital Smile Design

Can I change the design?

Yes. The mock-up exists so you can live with the design, give feedback and refine length, shape or shade before anything is final. Changes are much simpler at this stage than after treatment, so we encourage you to be honest about anything you would like different.

Does the mock-up hurt or damage my teeth?

No. The mock-up is made from a temporary material placed over your existing teeth without drilling or preparation, and it is removed easily afterwards. It may feel slightly bulky because it sits on top of your teeth, but it gives a realistic preview of shape and length.

Will the final result match the design?

The approved design guides both preparation and the lab, so the final restorations follow it closely. Porcelain is also more lifelike than mock-up material, with real translucency and depth, so most patients find the finished smile looks even more natural than the preview.

Results vary from person to person. Every treatment plan is decided after an in-person clinical examination.
